Preface This walking tour was prepared and originally led by Herbert J. Githens of Jersey City for the Jersey City Museum in celebration of Preservation Week 1980 on June 17th. Prior to the tour, in a workshop sponsored by the Museum and the Jersey City Library and directed by Cynthia Sanford and Robert Ferguson of the Museum and Joan Doherty of the New Jersey Room, the uses of historic maps and title searches in researching dates of construction and first ownership were explained. Carmen Franco, a resident of Van Vorst Park, conducted the workshop and tour for Spanish-speaking residents. The workshop was supported with funds from The New Jersey Committee for the Humanities and The State of New Jersey, Department of Education, State Library Advisory Council. Maureen Crowley was consulted as an editor in the preparation of the written tour. Josefine Castan, of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures of St. Peter's College in Jersey City, translated the written tour into Spanish. |
