CNE Tutorial Demo is
a nifty way to study for the NOVELL NETWARE certification tests. Also great if you just want
to learn more about computers!
CONF819E.ZIP provides a complete report on system
specifications.
DDARP_13.ZIP tracks down device drivers.
FIXCLOCK.ZIP lets you reset inaccurate system
clocks.
Generic SETUP
resets the time, date, hard drive definition, etc. For all 286 systems that do not have a
SETUP routine built in. Fine for the original IBM AT. I've even used it on older COMPAQ
386 systems that require a STARTUP disk.
Hard Drive Diagnostic (HDAT.ZIP)
provides a number of services for older MFM and RLL drives, including a low-level format.
Not as fancy as DISK MANAGER, but, hey, it's shareware!
Drive and Controller (hdspecs.zip) gives jumper settings and specifications for a wide range of older hard drives (MFM, RLL, and IDE) and MFM and RLL controllers. You even get a drawing of each of the controllers!
Hard Drive Tech Spec (hdts.exe) and Drives and
Controllers (hd.exe) in a single ZIP file. Catalogs older hard drives and controllers. Drives and Controllers also has
information on cables.
JCBENCH.EXE benchmarks the CPU, video, and hard drive
performance.
JOY2.EXE calibrates joysticks.
IRQINFO.ZIP shows which interrupts are being
used.
MAXSPEED.EXE determines the CPU clock
speed.
MEMSCAN.ZIP displays and manipulates the RAM
contents.
OVERHEAD.ZIP reveals what percentage of system
resources are being eaten up by drivers and TSRs.
Is the problem with your printer, your parallel port, your software, or what?
PCM140.EXE is a reference program that lists POST
error (port 80h) codes by BIOS manufacturer.
PORT11.ZIP allows the investigation and manipulation of
IO ports.
RAMMAP.ZIP lists the programs that are active in
memory.
READBI.EXE copies the BIOS to a disk file. Once there,
it can be modified. Then, with a PROM burner, a modified version can be produced.
The Ref 4.3 is an encyclopedic
collection of hardware text files.
RESOUR11.ZIP is like a memory fuel gauge for
WINDOWS 3.X. It'll let you know when your little buzzer is starting to run on empty!
RITM25.ZIP automatically corrects both operating system
and real time clock errors
SANDRA is a Windows 95 diagnostic
utility along the lines of Norton.
SBBEEP.ZIP causes the sound card to beep.
SHADTEST.ZIP sees if SHADOW RAM is (actually)
enabled.
SHOWS174.ZIP shows the chipset.
SNDTST.ZIP saves and restores sound card mixer and
channel volume settings.
Snooper 3.30 is another good hardware information utility.
SPC.ZIP is a bare-bones system spec tool.
SPYDOS.ZIP analyzes software interrupts.
SRXTEST.EXE reports if a CYRIX 486 upgrade will
"take" on a particular 386 motherboard.
STKVGA31.ZIP tests and specs out joystics.
Sys Check 2.4 is
a neat shareware resource that does a great job of itemizing the system hardware. Gives the CPU
speed and a large number of other specs. I use it every day to see if the installation of a serial port
or
modem was successful.
SYSINF.ZIP is a system information probe.
TMTX.EXE tests mice and trackballs.
AMIDIAG -- here's an old version of of a diagnostics program works best on 286 systems -- might clear the CMOS on 386s and above.
It checks nearly every aspect of hardware operation.
From the writers' of the
AMI BIOS.
Need specs for hard drives, floppy drives, optical drives, controllers, and host adapters?
Seagate has a great low level formatting utility
for their drives.
If you can't find it at the
SIMTEL Collection of system utilities, then it just ain't to be found!
But if you are aware of the dangers Monitors
1.01 is a
powerful tool.
This shareware program can also test video cards for characteristics
and
graphic modes.
Parallel Port 1.4 tests and specs out LPT printer ports.
(If you've got an XT or some other machine that Sys Check 2.4 won't run
on,
then try this older version of Sys Check.)
